Press launch of organic haircare brand Yarok

Tuesday, 25 October 2016

I had the honor to be invited by Naturligt Snygg and Scandinavian Beauty, for the Swedish press launch breakfast  of Yarok the organic hair care range from New York.
It was held in the new Scandia hotel Haymarket, where the shopping mall PUB used to be on Hötorget.

We were met by a gorgeous breakfast with sandwiches, fruits and raw cheesecakes. There was even a vegan option for me.

We had the pleasure to get to know the creator of Yarok, Mordecai Alvow. He is a celebrity hairdresser in New York, with roots from Israel. Which is part of his inspiration when creating the products. The word Yarok means green in Hebrew.

He started making his products at home after he got allergic reactions from the conventional products, to be able to continue doing his work. Eventually,  people started to show an interest in his products and that was the start of Yarok.

All the products are vegan, even the wax. They're completely natural, free from parabens, SLS and alcohol.

We got to hear Mordechai's story and  learning more about his products, whilst he demonstrated how to use them.

We then received a wonderful goodie bag with some of his most popular products that I will be reviewing soon.

Yarok is available at Naturligt snygg web shop

The 5 most important beauty products to swap to organic

Monday, 19 September 2016

We have just entered into soil association's organic beauty week. To swap over to organic can sometimes be overwhelming so I put together a list of the 5 products I think is the most important to swap first. Try and think of products you use most often or on biggest parts of your body and start with those.

Shower gel
A shower gel is something we use every day all over our bodies. It then gets flushed out through the drain and eventually reaches our waters. Choosing an organic shower gel helps not only the environment but also your skin. Staying away from harsh ingredients that dry out your skin will make your skin look and feel better. I choose Weleda shower gel.

Shampoo
Many people complain about itchy scalp and swapping to an organic shampoo normally helps. Many regular shampoos contain SLS that removes our natural oil which dries the scalp out. I choose John Masters Organics - zinc & sage

Jag väljer John masters organics - zinc and sage.

Toothpaste
When choosing a toothpaste I try and avoid ingredients like fluoride, triclosan and SLS. Using harsh chemicals that are bad for your health and cause irritation inside your mouth is a no-no for me. I choose Urtekram toothpaste

Deodorant
Many antiperspirants contain compounds like aluminium chloral hydrate, which makes a temporary plug within the sweat duct and makes you stop sweating. Research suggests that aluminium based compounds may be causing health problems.
Most deodorants simply work to fight bacteria and thereby prevent body odour and don't stop you sweating. When switching to a natural deodorant your glands and pores will begin to unclog and function properly. I choose C/O Gerd unisex deodorant

Face oil/cream
Choosing an organic facial oil or moisturiser will help to restore your skin's natural balance. The skin on your face is normally more sensitive than rest of your body so it makes sense to use a gentle product with as little harsh ingredients as possible that won't harm the environment, your health or your skin. I choose Mallow and white face oil.

Jag väljer Mallow and white face oil.

The Soil association is running a campaign all week which is called #lookforthelogo which simply means look for their logo when buying beauty products to know what you're getting.

What are you going to swap first? Or if you already have what did you think was the most important?

Also, check out my post on other things to swap this organic September

10 things you do that probably ruining your hair

Sunday, 8 May 2016

The things we do to our hair, the daily routines and the one time occurrences. They can wreck our hair. We are all guilty, me included.
I've put a list together of some of the things we do to our hair that ruins it and also what we should do instead to have healthy looking hair that we all long for.

1: You shampoo too often
I'm lucky because I'm too lazy to wash my hair too often. But I know it's easy to fall in to a vicious circle. Especially living in a polluted city like London or after a workout. To want to wash your hair daily. No matter what hair type you have. Washing your hair too often strips it off it's natural protective oils. Try to wash it every other or third day. If need be wash it with conditioner only in between.

2. You use a crap shampoo
We all done it.  Trying to find the cheapest option available. When it comes to shampoo, don't!
It doesn't have to be expensive to be good. But most cheap shampoos has cheap and bad for you ingredients. They contain harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) and cheap preservatives. Try to find shampoos that are free from sulphates and parabens. Read more about how to find a good shampoo. http://www.sarasteele.co.uk/2016/03/how-to-choose-good-shampoo.html?m=1

3. You use the wrong shampoo
I know it can be hard to choose the right shampoo for your hair with all the options that's out there. Try and get to know your hair. Is it dry or oily, straight or curly or coloured?
If your hair is oily you don't want a heavy moisturising shampoo that will weigh down your hair. If you have colour treated hair make sure you have a shampoo that is meant to protect both your hair and the colour and won't dry your hair out and possibly strip out the colour.

4. You use too much conditioner
It's so tempting to use half a bottle of conditioner to your ends to get that silky smooth feeling. But it's not necessary. It will work just as well or in fact much better with less. Too much will weigh your hair down and make it greasy quicker. Try to just condition the ends of your hair where it's actually needed. Your scalp don't need conditioner.

5. You use the highest setting on your blow-dryer
I know it's so tempting. The highest heat gets it done quicker and makes the hair look smoother. But be careful as the heat can actually make the water in your hair boil, which can cause cuticle damage.
Make sure you always use a heat protection before you blow-dry your hair. Also try and rough dry your hair as much as possible before you go over with a brush and blow-dry it smooth.

6. You over using your flatiron.
My ten years as a hairdresser the worst hair I've seen has always been caused by straighteners.
Overusing your straighteners or curling tongs causes breakage and split ends. Try not to use them every day and when you do use them make sure you use a thermal heat protection.
And for all it's worth do never use them on wet hair. Like why would you do that? Why? Don't do that.

7. You brush your hair too much
I know Disney taught us to brush our hair and it's wonderful. But there's something called too much brushing. It can cause your hair to split and become frizzy. The best brush to use is a tangle teezer as it's the most gentle way to ease up any knots in your hair.

8. You don't brush your hair at all -ever
Not brushing your hair can be just as damaging. Your hair gets knotted up and when you try to pull it apart you cause your hair to break or split. It's fine to wear your hair messy but there's different types of messy. Again use the tangle teezer.

9. You don't trim your split ends
I know, you want to grow your hair. But let me tell you something about hair and split ends. Once split it just going to continue to split further and further up the hair shaft. Which means the longer you leave your trim, the more you'll have to cut it off. Even if you are trying to grow your hair out, go for a tiny trim every 6-8 weeks for the health of your hair. It will be worth it when your hair is both long and healthy and everyone has hair envy.

10. Chemically treating your hair
We know bleaching, colouring and permanent straightening is bad for the hair. Yet everyone still continue doing it. And that's why I have a job. But let's be wise about it. Try to find a hairdresser who uses more gentle products. Look after your hair with treatments and hair masques.
Instead of bleaching all your hair, do highlights instead. It won't touch your scalp and is much better for your hair too.

I hope this has been helpful and will make you look after your hair better this summer.
Have you got any stories about how you have damaged your hair?

How To... Choose a good shampoo

Saturday, 19 March 2016

We have all been there. Our shampoo just ran out and time for a new one. But which one should I choose?
If you go into a shop there are isles and isles of hair products. There are so many to choose from.
I've put together a little guide to hopefully make it a little bit easier next time.

Trial and error
All hair is different and it can take time to find the perfect shampoo for you. What's good for your best friend or your favourite blogger might not work for you at all. Don't be afraid to try a few until you find the one you like. Try and see if they sell the one you want to try in a travel size. It's a perfect way of trying a new product.

Listen to your hair
Your hair has different needs, different times of the year. It tends to get drier in winter so will need a more moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Same goes when you're on holiday and it gets dried out by sun and sea water.

Avoid sls and parabens
Make sure you choose a shampoo without sls (sodium laurel sulphate) because it removes your natural oils and dry out your scalp. If you find your scalp often get itchy and irritated. That's probably why.

Parabens are cheap and effective preservatives which may lead to health issues. I wrote a blog post about it here

Get to know your hair
Is your hair dry or oily? Is it chemically damaged? Do you have an itchy scalp? Is it curly or straight? Is it fine or coarse? These are all things to consider when buying a shampoo.

Spend a little bit more
So many are prepared to spend £20-30 for a facecream but would never spend more than £5 on their shampoo. Sometimes it's worth spending a little bit more on your hair.   Give your hair the quality it deserves. Then you'll avoid cheap preservatives and many other unnecessary and unhealthy ingredients.

Choosing a natural and organic shampoo
Again, you might not find the one that works for you right away. Don't get disheartened, but try another one. Sometimes it takes time for your hair to get used to a natural shampoo, so give it time. Before you know it your hair will feel so much better and healthier.

What shampoo are you using at the moment?

Vad för schampoo använder du just nu?

Review | Saach organics

Thursday, 10 December 2015

Strengthening haircare using Ayurveda with Indian herbs, made in the UK. The last couple of months or so I've been using Saach organics basil, hibiscus & peppermint shampoo, for hair strengthening, and hibiscus, henna and primrose hair nourishment conditioner. I've also used the herbal hair oil.

Saach organics contain 100% natural actives and are free from

• parabens
• formaldehyde
• sulphates
• petrochemicals

They are cruelty free and suitable for vegans.

When I first started to use Saach I wasn't too sure about them. As many natural shampoos they don't lather that much and can sometime not feel like it cleans the hair as good. It can also weigh down the hair, leaving it feeling greasy. I tried a few different shampoos and in the end the one that worked best on my hair is the Basil, hibiscus & peppermint strengthening shampoo.

I then shampooed twice and rinsed it well. It worked and hair felt clean.

After a while I started to notice how it improved the condition of my hair. It felt soft, smooth and stronger. It's the best condition my hair been in for a long time.

The longer I used the products the more I like them. Because I see the benefit and how much better my hair feels. I keep getting compliments on my hair and all I've done is washing it.

The conditioner I liked right away. It feels great to apply it to the hair, easy to comb through and makes my hair smooth. I love the smell of the conditioner. Part from the hibiscus, henna and primrose, it also has almond and cinnamon. It's rather spicy and I love it.

The use of henna in their products is new to me. It also made me slightly nervous using them as I didn't want it to  change my colour. The henna Saach is using is a colourless henna so it won't make any difference to your hair colour and is fine to use on coloured hair.

I've also been using the herbal hair oil. Made from Indian gooseberry cotton seed oil and almond oil. Some of the other ingredients are henna, rose, coconut oil and red sandalwood. I apply oil on my scalp and throughout the hair and leave it over night. It sinks in to the hair so doesn't feel too greasy like many oils can do.

The herbal hair oil claims to open up blocked capillaries, improving the blood circulation on the scalp and brings back moisture to your hair.

My scalp often get dry and itchy and this oil has helped with that. My hair feels smooth and healthy.

Price is £10.95 a good value for a good and natural shampoo. The herbal hair oil is £12.90. You can buy them from LoveLula www.lovelula.com
I would definitely buy these again.

Have you ever tried Saachs organics products? Which natural hair products do you use?

How many beauty products I use in a day and the importance of choosing organic and natural

Thursday, 12 November 2015

Today is a short post to just remind you of how important it is to choose organic beauty products.

Yesterday I counted how many products I put on my body in one day. So everything from shampoo, cleansers, lotions, serums etc.

Guess how many?

21 products. In one day I put 21 products on my hair and skin. I was surprised myself. I don't even see myself as a product junkie. I know some days I use less and some days more depending on the day. When I realised I was so happy I only use natural and organic products.

Our skin is our biggest organ and it absorbs everything we put on it. This is why it's so important to use natural and organic ingredients. Avoid all toxic products. Your skin absorbing all these harmful ingredients that's not good for your health or the environment. If you want to read more about why choosing organic beauty products read my post about it here http://www.sarasteele.co.uk/2015/03/why-should-i-use-organic-beauty-products.html?m=1

This is the products I used in one day!
Shampoo
Conditioner
Hair serum
Body scrub
Shower gel

My autumn hair products

Friday, 23 October 2015

We are moving in to the colder winter months and it can mean disaster on your hair. But it doesn't have to, as I mentioned in a previous post, on how to look after your hair in cold weather.

This post is more about my favourite hair products during the winter and how I personally looking after my hair.

In the winter we expose our hair to extreme colds and heat with cold weather, central heating and hot showers. Eventually it will make your hair dry. The key is moisture and more moisture.

Let me tell you what I use on my hair at the moment to make sure my hair will be happy all the way through winter.

O'right Recoffee shampoo

It's important to use a moisturising shampoo to not dry out your scalp.
O'right's Recoffee range is repairing and moisturising. Perfect for cold weather. It's made from old coffee grounds.

C/o Gerd deep moist conditioner
It can be good to swap to a more moisturising conditioner in the winter to keep your hair from drying out.
C/o Gerd, a Swedish brand from Lapland, keeps impressing me with their products. I was amazed with this conditioner. It's made from blueberries and makes my hair soft and shiny. It feels great for days after I washed my hair.

John Masters avocado & lavender intensive conditioner

This is one of my favourite hair products. It's so lovely and it makes my hair feel soft and healthy. I like to use John Masters conditioner when I feel my hair need an extra boost. The lavender and avocado makes it smell lovely and it gives you a luxurious spa feeling.

Argan oil
Argan oil also known as liquid gold origins from Morocco. It's great for your hair making it feel softer, silkier and shinier. Argan oil is great in it's pure form so try and find 100% Argan oil. Many brands trying to fool you that they sell you argan oil, but they mix it with so many other ingredients. You only need couple of drops on your ends and it's going to feel so much healthier.

C/o Gerd B2 hair serum

Again I'm a big fan of c/o Gerd. Their B2 hair serum is hydrating and takes away any frizz and keeps my hair soft. I think it's important to use a product in the winter that hydrates your hair to avoid any static hair and helps it from drying out.

Those are the hair products I'm using right now. What are you using at the moment? Do you change your hair routine depending on season?
